Advanced Help: Describing Characters[]

Characters should almost never be described as attractive, beautiful, sublime, hideous or other words that generalize the quality of their features. These descriptive words tell the writer’s impression of the features, rather than setting out specific information. The reader cannot draw a mental picture from gorgeous.

When using describing words, the writer is asking the reader to do the work of imagining the characters. Most readers will not do the work, and the character will live in the reader’s mind only as a vague notion, easily forgettable.

Physical descriptions should be specific and vivid: cheerless eyes, a doughy forefront, a slender face, a nudge in his nose, curved back hair, a bulky forehead, thin and haggard lips, silk-fine curls, a scrawny body. Paint the picture for the reader.
